Sugar River update

November 5, 2011

I took my Dartmouth fly fishing class down to the Sugar on Monday Nov. 7th for their “final”.  Water was 40 degrees, so we were chucking woolly buggers and bead head stonefly nymphs.  Colin Lawson (TU staffer) also was fishing the river and reported one Rainbow landed.  Other than that it was a pretty slow [...]

NH Fishing Update 11/3

Ron and Steve hit the Pemi Thursday before the TU meeting here at the store.  Water temp. was 42 degrees but a few salmon were still active.  We had a couple of hook-ups each, a couple of short strikes (ok, probably misses) and 1 salmon landed (all on streamers -with marabou salmon flies like black [...]

Hanover Outdoors had clients on the water this past week at the Newfound and the Pemi.  Water levels at both locations were ideal, with both salmon and rainbows in the mix.  Tagged Atlantic Salmon are in the Pemi at this point, and have had plenty of time to spread out from the points where they [...]

Fishing Seasons in NH & VT

October 16, 2011

Generally speaking fishing season in NH closes Oct. 15th for most rivers and most species.  Check the reg book for a list of rivers, or sections of rivers, that are open past Saturday (such as the Pemi and Sugar rivers).  For example, the fly-fishing only section on the Sugar is open until Nov. 30th. In Vermont, trout [...]

Fishing Update 10/8

October 8, 2011

The Sugar:  Running high due to rain and dam releases.  It is about 52 degrees in the AM, although it warms up a bit throughout the day.  Caddis have been comming out of the bushes, size 14 or 16 tan caddis.  So try a caddis nymph fished with extra weight or a sink tip line. The Mascoma:  Water temp. in [...]

Fishing Report 9/26

September 26, 2011

Fishing on the NH side of the Connecticut is pretty good right now.  The Sugar and Mascoma have been fishing well in our area, as has the Upper Conn. river and its tribs. Look for Isonychia’s, Caddis and Blue Winged Olives hatching.  Most trout are being caught on nymphs.

Fishing Update 9/15

September 15, 2011

There is some good news to report.  A few weeks after Irene hit the Upper Valley a few streams are rebounding and are fishable again. On the VT side, you will have to hike into small tribs to find fishable water but the Brook trout did survive and are rising to dry flies in some [...]

Fishing Update

September 5, 2011

Obviously, you will be hard pressed to find anyplace fishable in Vermont. On the NH side, the only reports of fish being caught are on Mascoma Lake. It may be awhile before we can get back out there.

August 16, 2011

Rain, Rain and more Rain!!! It rained hard all day yesterday and last night.  As a result the rivers and brooks are high and muddy.  Check out the stream flows here. If it stops raining, it will take a few days for things to clear up and become fishable again.
