About Hanover, NH
Hanover NH is the home of Dartmouth College and its associated professional schools. It epitomizes the Ivory Tower community. That has its advantages and disadvantages. Unlike many college towns during the summer, you will find a few students around since Dartmouth College sophomores must attend a summer session. Lodging in town is expensive. Motels just outside of town have seasonal rates but are by no means budget locations. Many hikers do stay at the Chieftain a couple of miles north of town on RT. 10 or the Sunset, a couple of miles south of town on Rt. 10. However, the Hanover Improvement Society operates a campground at the Storrs Pond Recreation Area, about a 20 minute walk from town. It's clean, comfortable, and offers swimming.
There are several restaurants and Pubs in town that range from Subways and Ben & Jerrys to the dining room at the Hanover Inn. You can find French, Indian, Thai, and Chinese fare as well. By far the most popular breakfast locale is Lous on Main Street where you can sit down at a booth or pick up pastry from their sidewalk table. If you want to restock a bit for the trail or find a special snack for lunch, try the Hanover Coop grocery store on the trail at the edge of town, northbound. The Connecticut River offers recreational opportunities such as swimming near the boat house dock and canoe and kayak rentals from the Ledyard Canoe Club. There is a single laundromat a mile outside of town on RT. 10 North and some motels have laundry facilities. Medical problems can be addressed at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. If you need transportation, with a little patience getting around is fairly simple. Advanced Transit offers free local community bus service. |
