3 trips on the Vermont side this holiday weekend.
Took Tim C. to the Black River on Saturday 28th. River is still a bit high from all the rain, but water temp was 60 degrees. Had to nymph and only hits came on a Hare’s Ear or Pheasant Tail nymph. We fished them as droppers off of a Woolly Bugger to get down deep.
On Sunday and Monday I took Pam M. to the Ottauquechee and it was FANTASTIC. We caught fish all day long. Mostly Rainbows, no huge ones, and one really nice Brookie (see pic below)! Green Drakes were hatching throughout the day, as were some stoneflies and dark blue sedge caddis, so the fish were being very aggressive. Water temps were 58 in the AM and 60 degrees by mid-afternoon. We tried a few dries with no luck, but caught and released a dozen trout each day on nymphs and streamers. Hare’s ear was the best nymph, while a black, bead head woolly bugger, size 8, proved its worth once again. Also caught some Bows on a Muddler minnow and one or two on a Hornberg.
