Not good for trout fishermen and women. This hot weather, we are officially in a “heat wave”, has brought the water temps WAY up! The White River was 78 degress this morning and the Mascoma River was 80!!!
So trout fishing is very limited. In fact, unless you are going up into the mountains for brook trout we would suggest you give the trout a break until the weather cools. We’ve already had two reports of trout dying.
Warm water species, such as smallmouth, can still be caugth however. So grab your kayak and float the Connecticut River. Casting poppers into shore, or woolly buggers into the deep holes.
Another option is to head further north. Reports from the Newfound and Pemi have been decent, but even those rivers must have warmed up over the last two days.
Striper fishing is going well on the coast, so that is always an option if you have a 8 wt. rod. You could also go on a fishing trip to someplace cooler. Below is a pic of Jake Wheeler and his Atlantic Salmon from last week on Gaspe.
