Most local small streams have good water temps. (63 degrees this morning), which means the Brookies and small Bows will hit a dry fly again! We saw stonefly cases on the rocks so a Stimulator, size 14, is a good bet.
Look for Hex hatches at local ponds. Ken G. reports a lot of activity at Miller Pond the other day.
The White River is still muddy from the rains a few days ago. Water temp. was 70 degrees this morning (better than the past two weeks). A few customers have reported catching trout in the late afternoon hours and at dusk.
The Ottauquechee River is still too warm and too low to fish. Big Rainbows have been seen floating upside down, so give this river a rest for a while.
The Connecticut River is fishing well… mostly Smallmouth from a boat. Poppers cast into shore. Fun on a fly rod!!!
TODAY’s TIP
Summer rain storms often muddy up the rivers for a few days. Not only is it harder for us to wade in a muddy river, but it is harder for the fish to see our fly. Here’s my suggestion: Go bigger and darker! Less light is able to penetrate the muddy water so a dark (e.g. black) fly is more visible to the fish. Think Woolly Buggers and Leech patterns.
Fish will also be attracted to sound and vibrations when visibility is low. Flies with collars and stiff, clipped heads (think Muddler Minnows and Dahlberg Divers) push water when retrieved.
Good luck, have fun, and let us know how you do next time you go fishin’.
