Well we seem to have survived the “heat wave” although we’ve had several reports of fish kills in the local rivers (including a 22″ Rainbow in the Ottauquechee floating belly up). We had 1 1/2 inches of rain on Friday night/Saturday AM, which helped bring water levels back up and we are now into somewhat more normal summer temps. (forecast calls for mid to high 80′s with possible rain throughout the week). And we’ve been catching some trout on our recent trips.
Tate had a couple of guys out late last week and caught a few Rainbows, while Steve took Brent Coffin and friend out Sunday brook trout fishing with some success. Steve said the brook temp was in the mid- to high 60′s and the trout were hitting dry flies. That’s all good news!
The mid- to large rivers are probably still a bit warm (low to mid 70′s) for mid-day fishing. You might find a few fish in the early AM or late PM. Of course, warm water species might be easier to catch than trout. Drifting the Connecticut River with a jig or woolly bugger might produce some nice smallmouth.
