Fishing Update 5/7

by Ron on May 7, 2010

Rains have brought the rivers back up just enough to make wading and fishing a little more difficult (more rain in forecast for the weekend also).  Throw in very gusty winds, and we have had to work for our fish the last couple of days.

The White River didn’t fish that well on Wednesday 5th.  Water temp was 55-60 degrees depending on the location, and lots of bugs (stoneflies, caddis, and various mayflies) were hatching.  We only saw one trout rising and that was late in the day.  The smallmouth are still active though.  Black, beadhead woolly bugger works every time!

Hopped over to the Ottauquechee yesterday for an afternoon trip with Steve K.  When the wind wasn’t blowing our hats off, Steve was able to get a few Rainbows (one really nice one) by swinging a soft hackle hare’s ear nymph.  I think the trout were focused on the March Browns that were hatching.  Water temp was 58 degrees.

On the NH side, Seth caught a couple of trout on the Mascoma the other day.  However, he reports that the water was so low in the fly fishing only section that it was tough to find any visible white water or steady current.  Presumably they shut the gates at the dam to bring the lake level up?  If anybody knows more details, please share!
