One of our guides, Ben L., grew up here in NH and has been fishing most of his life. Here are his favorite fly patterns for fly fishing in NH:
1.) Black & Golden Stonefly Nymphs: Abundant in the streams in New England just about year round. It is good to keep a variation of sizes in your box not only to imitate the giant creeper stones and adolescent stones but also the early dark stoneflies that are around in early spring. Fish them right on the bottom at a dead drift with a slow retrive at the end back towards the bank and you cant go wrong.
2.) Stimulator: What I feel is an exceptional fly due to its ability to match different species and act as a simple attractor pattern. This is another fly to keep a variation of sizes and colors in because it can match the hatch on stoneflies and caddis flies. This seems to always be my “go to” pattern when fishing remote wild brook trout streams in the summer.
3.) Bead Head Hare’s Ear: I am with Ron on this one. Great nymph to match numerous different species of maylfly nymps. Keep a few of these in your box tied not only in the traditional hare’s ear style but also with flash back and soft hackle collar. The bead head hare’s ear when tied in tandem with a stonefly is a great searching pattern .
